Commoners
Frequently Asked

What are Commoners?

Commoners are a novel NFT project on Bitcoin Ordinals, featuring art by Harriet Clarke. They represent a collection of 10,000 distinct characters, inscribed on the blockchain through a community-driven, open, and free "minting" process. These digital assets are designed solely for their artistic and provenance value, without any additional utility. Copyright is retained by commoners.com.

Preparation for Mint Day

Before mint day, we recommend buying one or multiple virgin uncommon sats from Magisat or Magic Eden using an Xverse wallet. Everyone will mint/inscribe the same file and there is no "commoner selection." The 10,000 commoners will be randomly distributed to those who successfully mint.

Can I mint on a black uncommon sat?

No. Only regular uncommon sats are supported, as defined by Casey Rodarmor; This label is designated to the first satoshi of every block. Given that a new block is added to the Bitcoin blockchain approximately every 10 minutes, these sats capture the very beginning of that timeframe.

Total Number of Commoners

The Commoners collection is limited to 10,000 unique pieces, each inscribed on distinct uncommon sats on the Bitcoin blockchain. The first 10,000 successful minting attempts are recognized as official Commoners. There is no portion of supply reserved or restricted for the team.

Viewing Your Commoner

After the complete minting of the collection, each commoner mint attempt will be randomly linked to one of the 10,000 Commoners within a few days. You can verify if your mint attempt succeeded by viewing the check page. Until the link or "reveal" has been complete, users will see a placeholder. Owners can view their Commoners, either pre or post reveal, through ordinals marketplaces and explorers such as Ordinals Market, Magic Eden and ord.io.

Rarity Among Commoners

The rarity of Commoners isn't influenced by the "uncommon sats" they are inscribed upon. Some collectors may use rarer, historically significant sats (e.g. from 2009 Bitcoin blocks), which can add to a Commoner's collectible value, though it doesn't affect the rarity of the art itself.

Minting: Technical Notes

While the mint is ongoing, our indexer will be scanning through recent inscriptions. Live totals of confirmed & pending inscriptions are shown in the progress bar on the homepage and the mint page.

For a Commoner to be indexed correctly, all basic rules must be met - including being inscribed on an Uncommon Sat, and it must be in the first 10,000 inscriptions that meet these rules.

Basic Inscription Rules:

  • - Inscribed on an Uncommon Sat
  • - Content type is text/html
  • - Content matches the Commoners HTML
  • - Uncommon Sat hasn't been reinscribed
  • - Inscription does not have a parent inscription
  • - Inscription does not have a child inscription
  • - Inscription does not have a metaprotocol value
  • - Inscription does not have metadata

Additional notes:

  • - Do not use brotli compression, there are ongoing issues with ord preventing content from displaying.
  • - The inscription content is not completely strict, the indexer will accept additional whitespace. If any major modifications are made to the Commoners HTML, it may be not be indexed correctly. Do not modify the original!
  • - If you inscribe a delegate inscription, this will index correctly. Only the delegate content is used - so make sure it points to an inscription with the correct 'Commoners HTML' file. Sat rarity is not obtained from the delegate.
  • - The inscription is not inspected closely for usage of any specific OPCODE. If you use an alternative, we will pick it up in confirmed inscriptions (so long as it displays in the latest ord version), however it may not contribute towards the 'pending inscriptions' total.

Check your inscription:

You can use our checker tool to verify if your inscription is valid (inscription must be confirmed in the blockchain before checking!)
